Admin Monday 28th JUL 2014

Here's hoping everyone got out to see a few things at the Galway Arts Festival & the Galway Fringe Festival! This week is Race Week in Galway, so we're keeping our heads down and drawing indoors mostly, but here's some things to go look at and read while that's exploding around you!

Links:

A lot of Artists are using Gumroad to sell cool tutorial videos - cheap! It's a nice new phase in Internet sales, especially if you want 70 minutes of Marco Nelor talking about inking. Check out Dan LuVisi and Dave Rapoza as well.

Iggy linked to a rather cool statue of the Joker by S.H. Figuarts.

Artforum have one of their "comics" issues out in the shops. The Great God Pan is Dead blog covers it here. It's not a bad read, although not exactly ground breaking either. You can get more in-depth material in the very next post.

If you want to find good comics to stuff your Amazon wishlist full of, or pester your local comic shop about, watch this video frame-by-frame. It's awesome.

Craig Mullins is an incredible concept artist

Helen linked to the awesome run down of how to draw for Storyboards on Flooby Nooby.

Conor pointed us in the direction of the interesting-looking Comics Jam event.

There's a Kickstarter for the "perfect sketchbook".

Vogue publish some interesting articles on Art on their webpage (and I assume in their magazine?) like this one about Instagram.

Locust Moon Comics made 3 times their goal for their tribute to Little Nemo book on Kickstarter, Dream Another Dream. They put up these awesome videos of some big names drawing - see videos from Windsor McCay, Bill Sienkiewicz, Paul Pope, Dean Haspiel, Fabio Moon & Gabriel Ba at the drawing table.

And Paste Magazine gives us this list of 15 amazing Comic Artists to follow on Instagram! It really tied the week together. :)

That's it for another fortnight of updates! Make sure to come join us on Monday the 4th of August for our next Galway Pub Scrawl #116 in McSwiggans!

Galway Pub Scrawl #115 - Mr. Teapot!

More Art & laughing in the pub. Very sad that it was Ronan the bartender's last day, he will be missed. He's been a constant in our nearly five years (holy moly) in McSwiggans.

Here's the Art -

I got wrapped up in my own things and suddenly it was late and everyone was going home! There were more people about, I just didn't photograph them!

Donal Fallon -

Gerard Coady -

Patrick Gavin - "Terminator 5"

Katie Creaven -

Yolande O'Brien -

Alan Cunningham -

Mary Lillis -

Ciaran -

James Newell -

Ruth Campion -

That's it, that's all. So much fun was had! Make sure to come join us in two weeks time for Pub Scrawl #116 - Pub Scrawl Above and Beyond!

Admin Monday 14 JUL 2014 / 30 Day Drawing Challenge Wrap-Up

Updates:

The Galway Fringe Festival seems to have some great stuff on this year! Yolande has recommended "The Art of Mathematics" in NUI,G. There's a craft demonstration on making Teddy Bears on Saturday AND a paper craft exhibit in the Museum that I, for one, am going to go check out.

Our buddies in the Drink and Draw Sligo are back with a blast! Their next meet-up is in the Osta Coffe Shop & Wine Bar on the 19th!

Links:

As I wasn't in full speed sharing mode for the last month and a bit, other people put up some cool links in the in-between to keep the group entertained over on Facebook!

Iggy was a champ, posting up some cool videos -

And Ger was giving us some inspiring music!

And Mary found some great Hand Drawing (as in, how to draw hands) tips on DeviantArt.

Patrick wanted us to see these pics of a lost traffic jam....

Finally, Iggy found these shaped cucumbers. I don't know what the bottom left guys are meant to be... ?!?

30 Day Drawing Challenge:

The Drawing Challenge was SO GOOD this year, you guys. I was initially worried about moving it to June, because people don't like change :) but one of the first things I saw pop into my mailbox was this picture from Gordon MacKay, just knocking it out of the park, so I was pretty sure everything was going to be great after that!

Day One - Portrait of a family member

It's already getting hard to figure out variations on the days I've been trying to "keep the same", but the "Opposite Self" day was very fun.

Day Two - Draw your "opposite self"

Apparently "The Old Ragdoll" is a reference to a TV show? That was Yolande's intention with the topic, but most of us didn't get it. Anita drew this though, quite lovely -

Day Three - The old ragdoll

We had epic results on the favourite poem/lyric day, like Mike Dwyer's "John the Fisherman". Definitely going to be a staple of the future Challenges -

Day Four - Favourite poem/lyrics

I managed to get waaaaaay more done myself this year than the previous 2 years, and purely by having more fun with the topics, like Day Five - Warrior Fruit/Vegetable

It's always mind-bending to see how different people interpret the different topics, especially the really odd "word salad" ones - like Mary's take on Day Six - Irrigated Brains

Or the way Katie made up her Raggy God of Art & creativity for Day Seven - Birth of a God/Mythical creature

One of the days I was most worried about was the hourly comics day, but it came out GREAT. We had such a range of comics, in all kinds of styles, covering the whole day from Michelle to Ciara....

Day Eight - Make at least one 3-panel comic of your day (like an hourly comic)

And I spent a long time trying to match topics with their days and dates, like Day Nine - Just another manic monkey (Pub Scrawl #112) This Monkey is by Patrick Rogers.

Or cultural references that people might not get? But everyone was onboard with Day Ten - Blood (is the life) (Ger Coady)

Some people really committed to the full month, which is awesome. Philip Barrett was a champ, producing lots of stuff, like Day Eleven - Scenery/Landscape

"Were-whatever" on Day Twelve - Were-(animal of your choice) was awesome. Ruth killed it with this one -

It's always fun to have a topic that sends everyone to Wikipedia! Mary designed some awesome stuff for Day Thirteen - Triskaidekaphobia

I also loved all our team-ups this time around, like Day Fourteen - The Wizard of Oz with Dr Sketchy's Galway. The pic below is from Mo Keith, but you'll find photos from their sessions on Kerri's blog

On Day Fifteen - Design a Lady Knight, I encouraged everyone to use Dogbomber's Lady Knight Generator but Aideen killed it with this pic of Caoimhe. :)

You can see all of Day Sixteen - Fear into Fantasy over on the blog.

I love that people from all over send in their entries for our drawing challenge - Day Seventeen - Favourite Internal Organ featured this amazing spine by Joris, all the way from Switzerland!

And Day Eighteen - Something Gold/Yellow came from Sligo!

One of the most fun days was Day Nineteen - Choose your favourite possession. Make a Pokemon out of it - expect another Pokemon day next year!

Day Twenty - Something beautiful - there's only one pic that can represent this day! James Newell made me laugh when this email opened up:

The variety day, Day Twenty One - was Chess pieces. I loved Aghna's White Knight!

On Day Twenty Two - We made an Urban Sketch with Urban Sketchers Galway. See them on their blog!

Day Twenty Three - Re-imagine a pulp character as a modern day/futuristic character or a Noir version of a nursery rhyme character at Pub Scrawl #113 - Dermo came over the mountain!

Day Twenty Four - Strawberry Gothic was another "word salad" day. Love this interpretation by Philip Barrett:

We had more photos this year than before, but less videos... James sent in a great photo for Day Twenty Five - Summertime

And Mike Dwyer ruled Day Twenty Six - Your favourite Irish Historical character/myth

You have to go check out Day Twenty Seven - What if everyday technology was alive? - such great entries, like this one from Gordon MacKay:

And Patrick chose a very recognisable Day Twenty Eight - Master Copy. Go see the others!

Now you should pop over to the blog to see Day Twenty Nine - Draw a Human/Elf/Dwarf/Halfling (Fantasy)

On Day Thirty - Anything you'ld like!, Aideen ruled the day with her "guess the textures" photo! Love it!

And that was that! We seemed to have less people participating this year, but those that were in were committed, which was great. That said, we might move back to July for next year, just to keep up with everyone's schedules. I'm looking for feedback on it, but I'm hearing that July is good? Post below or message me with your opinions.

SO much coming up before that though, you guys. A monthly Dr. Sketchy's Galway, our fifth birthday, 24 hour comic day, a possible visit to Drink & Draw Cork, a possible exhibition, our culture night collab with 091 labs, but first and foremost, our next Pub Scrawl! #115! Crazy!

Galway Pub Scrawl #114 - The smell of yer wan

More Art & laughing in the Pub! It was LOUD this week, although the whole world seemed to have the volume turned up, so maybe I'm going the opposite of deaf? Anyway, in detoxing from the 30 Day Drawing Challenge, here are your pics -

Come back and join us here on the blog next week for (maybe) a short recap on the 30 Day Drawing Challenge and in two weeks time in McSwiggans for another epic Galway Pub Scrawl #115 - our new mascot & Internet sensation, Mr Teapot!
