Jay has started a new Secret Sunday Scrawl in the Secret Garden Cafe on (or near? It might still be Williamsgate street or whatever) Sea Road, Galway. You can find us having the next one on the 8th of February at 14:00 hours.



We're almost done with assembling a "Galway Pub Scrawlbook" - it's going to be a collection of sketches and works from our Scrawlers. If you are a regular or even part-time member, hit up the event and get in touch to have your Art featured in the book. But you better move quick! It's almost time to go to press.

The Galway Fringe Festival seems to have some great stuff on this year! Yolande has recommended "The Art of Mathematics" in NUI,G. There's a craft demonstration on making Teddy Bears on Saturday AND a paper craft exhibit in the Museum that I, for one, am going to go check out.

Our buddies in the Drink and Draw Sligo are back with a blast! Their next meet-up is in the Osta Coffe Shop & Wine Bar on the 19th!

30 Day Drawing Challenge:

The Drawing Challenge was SO GOOD this year, you guys. I was initially worried about moving it to June, because people don't like change :) but one of the first things I saw pop into my mailbox was this picture from Gordon MacKay, just knocking it out of the park, so I was pretty sure everything was going to be great after that!

Day One - Portrait of a family member


It's already getting hard to figure out variations on the days I've been trying to "keep the same", but the "Opposite Self" day was very fun.

Apparently "The Old Ragdoll" is a reference to a TV show? That was Yolande's intention with the topic, but most of us didn't get it. Anita drew this though, quite lovely -

We had epic results on the favourite poem/lyric day, like Mike Dwyer's "John the Fisherman". Definitely going to be a staple of the future Challenges -

I managed to get waaaaaay more done myself this year than the previous 2 years, and purely by having more fun with the topics, like Day Five - Warrior Fruit/Vegetable


It's always mind-bending to see how different people interpret the different topics, especially the really odd "word salad" ones - like Mary's take on Day Six - Irrigated Brains


Or the way Katie made up her Raggy God of Art & creativity for Day Seven - Birth of a God/Mythical creature


One of the days I was most worried about was the hourly comics day, but it came out GREAT. We had such a range of comics, in all kinds of styles, covering the whole day from Michelle to Ciara....

Day Eight - Make at least one 3-panel comic of your day (like an hourly comic)




And I spent a long time trying to match topics with their days and dates, like Day Nine - Just another manic monkey (Pub Scrawl #112) This Monkey is by Patrick Rogers.


Or cultural references that people might not get? But everyone was onboard with Day Ten - Blood (is the life) (Ger Coady)


Some people really committed to the full month, which is awesome. Philip Barrett was a champ, producing lots of stuff, like Day Eleven - Scenery/Landscape


"Were-whatever" on Day Twelve - Were-(animal of your choice) was awesome. Ruth killed it with this one -


It's always fun to have a topic that sends everyone to Wikipedia! Mary designed some awesome stuff for Day Thirteen - Triskaidekaphobia


I also loved all our team-ups this time around, like Day Fourteen - The Wizard of Oz with Dr Sketchy's Galway. The pic below is from Mo Keith, but you'll find photos from their sessions on Kerri's blog


On Day Fifteen - Design a Lady Knight, I encouraged everyone to use Dogbomber's Lady Knight Generator but Aideen killed it with this pic of Caoimhe. :)

I love that people from all over send in their entries for our drawing challenge - Day Seventeen - Favourite Internal Organ featured this amazing spine by Joris, all the way from Switzerland!


And Day Eighteen - Something Gold/Yellow came from Sligo!


One of the most fun days was Day Nineteen - Choose your favourite possession. Make a Pokemon out of it - expect another Pokemon day next year!


Day Twenty - Something beautiful - there's only one pic that can represent this day! James Newell made me laugh when this email opened up:


The variety day, Day Twenty One - was Chess pieces. I loved Aghna's White Knight!


On Day Twenty Two - We made an Urban Sketch with Urban Sketchers Galway. See them on their blog!

Day Twenty Three - Re-imagine a pulp character as a modern day/futuristic character or a Noir version of a nursery rhyme character at Pub Scrawl #113 - Dermo came over the mountain!


Day Twenty Four - Strawberry Gothic was another "word salad" day. Love this interpretation by Philip Barrett:

And that was that! We seemed to have less people participating this year, but those that were in were committed, which was great. That said, we might move back to July for next year, just to keep up with everyone's schedules. I'm looking for feedback on it, but I'm hearing that July is good? Admin **FRIDAY!?!** 30 MAY 2014

Updates:

The 30 Day Drawing Challenge is ABOUT TO START! This is going to be great. The drawing challenges have been my favourite time of year the last two years, and I'm expecting it to be better again this year. Go check out the topics and get ready to post Art on the Facebook page!

The Islanders released a publication - Black Night Magazine. You can buy it on their Storenvy page - I highly recommend it.

Speaking of the Islanders - tangentially, Sceitse, the Cork-based outdoor sketch group, were featured in ImagineFX #110. Pretty good for them, but as sample Art was included from times we met up with them... some of us were featured in it! You can see details over on Jay's blog.

What else? So much else. We're giving a talk in Charlie Byrne's on the 5th, What *is* all this Urban Sketching anyway?, there's booking available for the next Dr Sketchy's Galway - The Wizard of Oz on the 14th and we're out drawing Quay Street for Urban Sketchers Galway #004 on the 22nd of June... oh jeez, you guys, there's probably a million more again. I'll try and slip in more updates during the month if possible, but this blog is going to be filled with ART for the drawing challenge in June. Next Admin Monday update on the 14th of July!

Our 31 day drawing challenge is going to be moving to June and becoming a 30 day drawing challenge! This isn't just to save us a day of effort, but also because July always seems to be a crazy busy month here in Galway, with the Arts Festival and the Races and people going on holidays and so forth... so June it will be! That's only just over a month away, so get ready! We almost have all the topics picked out, so a provisional list will go up soon, but if you have any suggestions feel free to leave a comment or join us on the Facebook group for discussions!

Our new Galway collective is on the move! Urban Sketchers Galway is our new endeavour, to bring us out to draw the town and anything else we find interesting. Follow us over there on the blog or on the new Facebook group. Our next sketch meet-up will be at the end of April at the Docks, Galway.

The application process for the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year is now open, until May 1st. If you're interested, apply now - you need to fill in the form on the site and provide a self-portrait.

We had our first Dr. Sketchy's Galway yesterday in Monroe's Live - great session, great venue. Keep an eye out for the next one in April! It was very exciting, very rewarding drawing. Huge thanks to Scarlett and her crew for all their hard work. Lots of Pub Scrawlers won doughnuts and tequila for their sketches, so we were well-represented.

James Newell and Ronan Coyle have started a new fortnightly drawing challenge, Lead Wednesday. Check out the site and contact them to get involved.

It doesn't seem likely that the Camera Obscura Doc "Tim's Vermeer" will be coming to Galway - here's another lady who built her own one if you want to read more on the subject. Stephanie also linked to pictures of one that was set up in Camden Palace in Cork last summer - very cool.

The nominees for the Spectrum 21 awards are up on John Flesk's blog and they are FANTASTIC.

Google are building a Gallery software for Artists and Institutions to showcase their work with embedding tools for websites, everything. It looks really awesome and you can apply for it here.
