Speaking of cartooning, I enjoy the posts on the "Things by Dan" blog, especially when he breaks down types of pens and their mark making capabilities.

Here's hoping everyone got out to see a few things at the Galway Arts Festival & the Galway Fringe Festival! This week is Race Week in Galway, so we're keeping our heads down and drawing indoors mostly, but here's some things to go look at and read while that's exploding around you!

A lot of Artists are using Gumroad to sell cool tutorial videos - cheap! It's a nice new phase in Internet sales, especially if you want 70 minutes of Marco Nelor talking about inking. Check out Dan LuVisi and Dave Rapoza as well.
Iggy linked to a rather cool statue of the Joker by S.H. Figuarts.
Artforum have one of their "comics" issues out in the shops. The Great God Pan is Dead blog covers it here. It's not a bad read, although not exactly ground breaking either. You can get more in-depth material in the very next post.
If you want to find good comics to stuff your Amazon wishlist full of, or pester your local comic shop about, watch this video frame-by-frame. It's awesome.

Our new Galway collective is on the move! Urban Sketchers Galway is our new endeavour, to bring us out to draw the town and anything else we find interesting. Follow us over there on the blog or on the new Facebook group. Our next sketch meet-up will be at the end of April at the Docks, Galway.
The application process for the Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year is now open, until May 1st. If you're interested, apply now - you need to fill in the form on the site and provide a self-portrait.

Rafael Grampá teamed up with Absolut and Facebook to make a sort of "crowd-sourced" plot for an animation short - it's a mix of 2-D and 3-D work and it's pretty stunning.
Anita linked us to Renae De Liz' Peter Pan project, a graphic novel coming out soon. You can check out a load of preview pages at the website.
Muddy Colors featured a process video of Rebecca Guay's "The Visitor", which is going to be the cover of Spectrum 21! Very nice.
Patrick linked us to an article about patterns being drawn on a potter's wheel. Don't let Mikhail Sadovnikov's hypnotic art entrance you... too much.

This tumblr, Movies in Color, makes up breakdowns of movie stills into their palettes - great work being done there.
Illustrators Ireland had a raffle for these pieces - congrats to those who won them, they're wonderful.
Buzzfeed provided a list of 20 animated GIF artists you have to follow - and you really do!

We had our first Dr. Sketchy's Galway yesterday in Monroe's Live - great session, great venue. Keep an eye out for the next one in April! It was very exciting, very rewarding drawing. Huge thanks to Scarlett and her crew for all their hard work. Lots of Pub Scrawlers won doughnuts and tequila for their sketches, so we were well-represented.
James Newell and Ronan Coyle have started a new fortnightly drawing challenge, Lead Wednesday. Check out the site and contact them to get involved.

Patrick linked to a cool Human Anatomy app on Google Play, MARA3D. You can look at different levels of musculature, etc, all on your smart phone or tablet. Very handy.
Cynthia Sheppard put up a very touching blog post about using her Art to help get through her divorce.
Helen reminded us that Schoolism is running great online courses.
Not a huge amount of content, but an interesting look at the History of the Nude in Art over on The Guardian. From there you'll find tons more links about Art on The Guardian website, worth checking out.
Muddy Colors posted the amazing winners of their Rising Stars annual contest. The winners (and the runners-up) are stars indeed.

It doesn't seem likely that the Camera Obscura Doc "Tim's Vermeer" will be coming to Galway - here's another lady who built her own one if you want to read more on the subject. Stephanie also linked to pictures of one that was set up in Camden Palace in Cork last summer - very cool.
The nominees for the Spectrum 21 awards are up on John Flesk's blog and they are FANTASTIC.
That's it, that's all - the next regular Pub Scrawl would fall on St. Patrick's day, which is NOT a day to expect to get to concentrate on drawing or craft-making in the pub, so we'll skip. Hey everybody! I have to go back and add details for all the photos on the Pub Scrawl posts, I'm a few behind at the moment, sorry about that! Work has taken to scheduling me for Tuesday mornings, so I just barely have time to upload the pics on a Monday night before I collapse to bed. So, we survived the 24 hour comic day over the weekend, somehow. I'm going to produce a PDF of all the pages as soon as possible, featuring all the pages I can get from myself, James Newell, Brian Naughton, Liam Naughton, Declan Carroll and all the others I can gather together.... thanks to all. Special thanks to 091 labs for hosting us, as always it makes a great venue for projects.

Arnie Fenner has some reason to add to the recent "greatest commencement speeches ever" trend. It's okay to slog at the coal face. Keep your feet on the ground while your eyes are trained on the sky.
Nicola Verlato mixes classical painting, Greek Myth and Sci-Fi in awesome compositions.
There was a great post on imgur about how to recognise different Artists. It's like an Art History survey course in one page.
Aaron Beck is an awesome concept artist who worked on Elysium - there's some concept work up from the film.
Did you ever hear of One Thousand Thousand? Artists Jason A. McHenry and Christopher Dyer have been working on making a million paintings together, sometimes with other people involved too. They've waxed and waned on output over the years, but are currently on a high spell. You can buy them on their website, but it's the pure collaboration involved that I like.

Helen is helping to run the Galway Fringe Festival pop-up shop. In her words:
"Galway Fringe festival is doing an art pop-up shop for the Visual Art sector of the festival. Every artist will be given a stall in the Factory, in the upstairs open air garden, and there's a selling limit of 50 euro per item. I figure that's a great way for artists to produce lots of work and sell them cheaply, and it's a selling strategy that would really suit sketchers NUDGE. It will take place for a weekend during the Galway Arts Festival. As of yet undetermined."
We'll have more details as time approaches. :)
Ciaran wants you to like his page on Facebook - his venture, CreoDrone, will do 3-D printing for you at a low cost. Contact him if you need some 3-D printing done in the Galway area (or anywhere, I'm sure).
Also, Irene wants you to like her crochet page, Owls and Rainbows.

There was a cool competition to win a DIY Print Shop that lets you screenprint at home. But the competition was only open to America... aw boo. But if the idea of a DIY Screen Print kit floats your boat, here's the link.
There was a great quotation going around about the top end of the contemporary Art market -
"The circle of collectors and dealers is so small and so awash in cash that the process can seem to an outsider a bit like a rigged game, in which a bad deal can be considerably more valuable than a good one. If you buy a giant balloon toy for $30 million, you may have spent a few million more than you had to or even expected to; but you’ve set the value of that work and also elevated the value of all of the balloon toys in your collection. Which is especially good, since there aren’t very many people who can afford to spend $30 million on a giant balloon toy, and those who can tend to take pleasure in cornering a market."

Frieze New York 2013 was on the last few weeks. "Contemporary" Art isn't normally a focus for Pub Scrawl, but some stuff was good this year. You can check out some here, here and here and elsewhere on the net...
And Robert Longo is still working - which I like a lot.

Our friends over at the Irish Sketch Society are still running their weekly sketch challenges! Mary was encouraging us to join in two weeks ago, we dabbled in the last one at last week's Pub Scrawl, and you should go over there now and join in the fun.
Jay is working for a project you can support on Kickstarter - Adventures Dark & Deep!
Alanna linked to a job opportunity if you know anything about UI Web Development.
Yolande pointed out that the Galway Theatre Festival is looking for a Festival Image 2013.
Also, there is a new event starting in Dublin - Laydeez Do Comics - Maura McHugh is going and wants any other Galwegians or others interested to come check it out.

I was blown away by these short painting videos from Marc Dalessio.
The final images for Microvisions 2013 went up! Very cool.

Elliot Alfredius designs characters straight out of a Studio Ghibli film! They're awesome.

Yolande pointed out this art contest for the Donkey Sanctuary in Co. Cork. The theme is Donkeys.... :) Closing date is the 19th of March.
And Yolande pointed out that Ropes are looking for Art Submissions for their 2013 issue - the deadline is today, so move fast!
Today is also the last day for this good cause which needs some Art that Joe Neary pointed out.
The Gazebo are still looking for Art for their next issue, the theme is Virtual Gaming. Get your art into them!

The Disney Social Network game that Eva Widermann worked on concept art for has been teased - congratulations Eva! Eva's founding of Drink & Draw Cork inspired us to start Galway Pub Scrawl, so it's great to hear awesome career news for her. :)
Aaron Diaz has been designing characters from the Silmarillion - they're pretty awesome.
Patrick also pointed out this cool artist on DeviantArt, Phobs, who is also taking inspiration from the Silmarillion.
The Art Order has been publishing Painting Ideas as a springboard to creativity.
If you think your art is bad, check out the lousy book covers tumblr. Update: They also cross-post on Facebook now.

Tom Fowler put up his entries for Spectrum 20 - I love his work, but it was also a good signal that *everyone* would be posting great art for their Spectrum 20 entries over the next few weeks.
Chris Sanders has been posting his storyboard work from "The Croods" - I really like looking at storyboard art, but these are exceptional - lively and full of character!
On Facebook, the very interesting and sometimes deeply odd Cartoon Jumbles mix different cartoon characters together.
Patrick pointed out this cool script-writing/story-boarding tool, Celtx. It's a kind of Evernote for scripts that can sync across all your devices. Very nice.
